Melissa Block is a 24-year veteran of National Public Radio and has been hosting All Things Considered since 2003. Her stories from Sichuan, China, in the immediate aftermath of the devastating earthquake in May 2008, earned NPR a Peabody Award, a duPont-Columbia Award, a National Headliner Award and a Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Block was one of four NPR journalists in Chengdu when the earthquake struck, turning the tiny news operation in a Sheraton hotel into the only Western broadcast news source for coverage of the disaster. She returned to China in 2009 to follow-up on the aftermath of the earthquake one year later.
I try to be there at 5:30 but the event officially starts at 6:00. Several folks are now getting there early so we typically have one game starting around 5:30, a second starting before 6 and two or three more after 6. Yes, we have had enough people for four or five concurrent games for awhile now. Don't miss the fastest growing craze in Lexington! (Or something like that.) The games played will take variety of forms often with one long (3 hour) game and several shorter games. The types of games are pretty varied so for example on a recent night we played Agricola, Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Guillotine, Bohnanza, Apples to Apples, and Pandemic. You'll have lots to choose from. And as always, new folks have the option of picking a game!!

The sound of the Portland, Oregon's Foghorn Stringband could have come barreling through the grille-cloth of those big console radios in the living rooms of the 1950's, when the traditional sounds of rural America were still on the minds of young musicians transferring the old-time music to a distinctively modern age. Their tight intstrumental work and line-up - fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass and guitar - is reminiscent of early bluegrass, but their powerful approach is whole-heartedly old-time, centered largely by the fiddle. Devoted to the interpretation and performance of American stringband music, their style encompasses early country music, the fiddle repertoire of the Southern Appalachians and the Midwest, and the stringband sounds of the Piedmont region. They are highly regarded by traditional music lovers, and frequently perform with Dirk Powell, one of the country's most renowned musicians of the genre, as the Dirk Powell Band. While they are committed to playing authentic old-time music, the members of Foghorn Stringband are not strict recreationists in costume; yet neither are they experimentalists of the digital age. Whether it's on stage in a rock venue, a bluegrass festival, or at a dance in the Grange Hall, they further this great tradition through a profound belief that old-time music, played in a traditional way, is still relevent and very much alive in the 21st century. Initially gaining a reputation in the Pacific Northwest in the role of a square dance band, they have thrilled dancers and concert audiences at festivals throughout the world. This foundation in providing music for square dances - where the insistent sound of the dancers' shoes slapping the hardwood floor provides a beat of it's own - still permeates all of Foghorn's music, as evidenced by the people dancing in the aisles during the band's performances. No matter what the venue, this is what old time music is all about.

We will be reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. It looks to be rather dark, but it seems many of us want to read it. It is heralded as a classic by many. Here is what amazon.com has to say about it: "Plath was an excellent poet but is known to many for this largely autobiographical novel. The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly-written book, which remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity."
Come out and learn Adobe techniques and possibly win some free software. This meeting is free to the public and food may be provided, as well as software and book raffles. This is also a mandatory meeting if you want to be included in the May Adobe Creative Suite raffle. In order to participate in any raffle, you will need to purchase a yearly membership for $30 ($3 per meeting). You will also have the chance to network and pass out business cards. Photoshop, Illustrator and possibly After Effects will be covered.
